General
Flaxmill Accommodation is located in Flaxmill Bay, a small coastal community by Cooks Beach, in Mercury Bay on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. Our physical address is 1031 Purangi Road, Flaxmill Bay.

Flaxmill has 14 three-bedroom Houses on the property – 2 of these have Beach Views and 5 offer wheelchair-friendly accessible amenities.
As well as the Houses, there are 4 one-bedroom Cottages and 1 Studio Unit.
In summer we operate a small boutique campground with only 24 garden campsites.
Check-in is between 3.00pm – 6.00pm
Check-out is by 10am
Yes – please let us know in advance so we can make sure we’ve left instructions for you.
No – We love fur babies however have to be mindful of the comfort of all our guests on the property. Therefore only service dogs are allowed on-site.
There are no dedicated boat parks on-site.
- If staying in the Campground, your boat must fit within the boundaries of your marked site and within the requirements as set out in our Terms of Occupancy.
- If staying in one our Houses, please let us know in advance if you are bringing a boat. Not all Houses have space to park a boat and this is subject to availability.
- There is no boat parking provided for those staying in the Cottages, Studio or Cabin.
Yes – For staying guests there is free car parking provided on-site, this is limited to the type of accommodation booked.
- The Cottages, Studio and Cabin allow for 1 vehicle only.
- The Houses have space for 2 vehicles (including boats). If you are wishing to bring your boat, please let us know first as not all Houses have enough parking space for a car + boat.
- If staying in the Campground, all vehicles (including boats) must fit within the boundaries of your site and within the requirements as set out in our Terms of Occupancy.
No – Our staff are not licensed to transport passengers.
Flaxmill is within walking distance (~ 1km) from Ferry Landing .
Yes – We have hosted conferences, destination weddings and family reunions where the lead guest has booked ‘Exclusive Use’ for their group. This means up to 80 guests can stay and meet/celebrate together with full use of the grounds and event facilities.

Staying in the accommodation
People capacity is strictly limited to 6 (including infants) in the Houses. No extras can stay in the beds or sleep on the couches.
The number of people staying in our accommodation and campground is directly connected to our Resource Consent.
Yes – 5 of our three-bedroom Houses have accessible features, including; 800mm wide doorways, a kitchen with all equipment positioned at, or below, bench height, a bathroom with roll-in shower, fold down seat, handrails, higher toilet and lowered mirror.
The Houses are on one-level with easy access from a wide deck and a dedicated mobility parking space within 20 metres of the entrance.

We provide the following:
- Initial complimentary coffee, tea, sugar and a small starter milk
- Glasses, crockery and cutlery for 6 people (in the Houses) or 2 people (in the Cottages).
- Basic cooking utensils, pots and pans (relevant to the unit)
- Bed linen, bath towels and starter travel toiletries
- Cleaning equipment
Please bring your own:
- Food & supplies for your stay (other than what is initially provided)
- Beach towels
There is a coffee plunger provided in the accommodation. If you’re after “café quality’, Eggcentric café (just a short walk from Flaxmill) makes excellent coffee, and there are other great providers only a short drive away.
Yes – we have a few available for hire (at additional cost). This is on a first-in-first served basis, so please book these with us in advance.
Staying in the campground
Our boutique campground is seasonal and opens just before Labour Weekend (late October) and closes after the Easter holiday break.
Our Houses and Cottages are available to book all year round.
The kitchen facilities include large fridges, toasters, ovens and washing up equipment – BYO pots, pans and utensils (these are not provided).
There are shared BBQs (gas) located by the central block and covered outdoor seating areas for campground guests to use.
The central block includes immaculate bathroom amenities including toilets, basins, mirrors and hot metered showers. There is also an accessible shower and toilet.
Yes – we have hot metered showers that are free to use in low season (tokens available from the office).
In the busy peak season, these are charged at $2 per shower. This is how we manage our very important water resources in the summer months.
Yes – Flaxmill’s central block includes laundry amenities with coin-operated washing machines and driers, plus an outdoor clothes line.

No – Only gas BBQs are allowed. You can bring your own or use one of the provided gas BBQs near the central block.
Travelling with kids
No – There is no playground on the grounds, but we are directly adjacent to the best natural playground – a family-friendly tidal beach, with rock pools nearby to explore and bush walks to enjoy.
There are public playgrounds located at Purangi Reserve in Cooks Beach and also in Whitianga, near the ferry wharf.
Yes – You can bring bikes however they must wear a helmet, avoid the entrance area and be supervised by a caregiver at all times.
Flaxmill Bay beach is tidal and can be shallow at certain times of the day – this is great for kids to safely splash around in. It does get deeper further out, so of course, children need to be supervised at all times. There are waves, but these are generally gentle due to the sheltered nature of the bay – great for boogie boarding.
We do not recommend swimming at Front Beach (a little further on than Flaxmill Bay). It tends to have heavy undertows and larger waves.
The local area
In nearby Cooks Beach, there is a General Store for basic groceries and essential items, a fish & chip shop, wine shop and a couple of dining establishments.
Whitianga town has 2 full supermarkets (Woolworths and New World) within a 20 minute walk from the wharf.
There is no taxi service or ride share (Uber) in the immediate area. There is in Whitianga town.
Yes – there are dining establishments close by in Flaxmill bay, Cooks Beach, Hahei and Hot Water Beach.
