Wheelchair-friendly activities in the Mercury Bay Area

If you’re staying in one of Flaxmill’s 5 Accessible Houses, you might want some ideas of what wheelchair-friendly activities there are to do in the local area.

Should you wish to do a specific tour or activity that doesn’t advertise wheelchair accessibility, we suggest contacting them directly, as many businesses will be happy to help to accommodate you as best they can.

Whitianga Passenger Ferry

The ferry operates 365 days a year, running continuously throughout the day (a seasonal timetable operates). The main ferry is wheelchair accessible and this ferry is used most of the time. If you know the day you are planning on crossing, contact them to confirm the main ferry is in service for that day.

Toes in the Water - Whitianga

This is a volunteer based charity organisation, focused on making Whitianga beaches accessible for everyone. They have a Beach Trooper All Terrain Wheelchair with a weight capacity of 150kg and an Adult Beach Walking Frame for anyone to borrow (subject to availability).

Whitianga Harbour

Whitianga Wharf & Esplanade

The main wharf and esplanade areas feature flat, accessible paths and public restrooms. There are great local eateries with wheelchair-friendly access nearby, including Stoked Public House and Blue Lagoon Bar & Eatery. If driving, Whitianga includes multiple mobility parking spaces within the town.

Mercury Bay Discoveries

Mercury Bay Discoveries offer a 2.5 hour tour of the breathtaking Cathedral Cove and the surrounding marine reserve. on their Mercury Star catamaran - the boat is wheelchair accessible and is boarded via ramps which are suitable for mobility access.

Glass Bottom Boat

Explore the local coastline above and below the surface. Tours depart from Whitianga Wharf, which has a ramp suitable for wheelchairs. The boats themselves don't have wheelchair access, but they are happy to assist those with limited mobility on board. Please contact them when booking.

Mercury Bay Museum

If you'd love to learn some history about the local area, the Mercury Bay Museum is a great place to visit. Located directly opposite Whitianga Wharf, the museum has wheelchair access and mobility parking is available on The Esplanade.

Mercury Twin Cinemas

MTC - Mercury Twin Cinemas

The local movie theatre in Whitianga has a wheelchair "seat" available in each cinema. Access to the MTC is at ground level and there is a carpark across the road that includes mobility parks. Ring to book your seats and you can pay at arrival.

Mobility Parking

Thames Coromandel District Council (TCDC) provides mobility carparks throughout the district (painted blue and yellow). A valid CCS Mobility Parking Permit must be displayed. (Note: Overseas visitors should apply for a temporary New Zealand mobility permit as overseas passes are not automatically recognised in all regions).
