Great Swimming Beaches

Great Swimming Beaches

Flaxmill Bay itself offers one of the safest swimming spots in the Coromandel and is just across the road from our campsite. The kids can potter in the estuary and Shakespeare Cliff offers great shelter. Front Beach and the larger Cooks Beach are only a short walk away from the campsite and Hahei Beach is about a 10km drive.

Dig your own hot pool at Hotwater Beach

Dig your own hot pool at Hotwater Beach

A couple of kms past Haihei is Hotwater Beach. Not recommended as a swimming beach but grab your spade and for 2 hours either side of low tide you can dig a hole in the sand and make your own spa pool in the thermal waters. Spades are available for hire at the dairy and if you need a coffee-fix, Hot Waves Café is a winner.

Cathedral Cove

Cathedral Cove

A short drive from the Hahei shops is the start of a magnificent coastal walkway through to Cathedral Cove. The walk is a couple of hours round trip so wear sturdy shoes, take a picnic and don't be afraid of a few steps. It's well worth it!

Something for the kids

Something for the kids

If the kids (or you) need a break from the beach, there are plenty of things to do and see in the region. Take a picnic lunch to Whiti Farm Park and feed the animals. Head towards Coromandel town and visit the Waiau Waterworks or the Driving Creek Railway. Or for rainy days, there's always the movie theatre in Whitiangi.
